BLE Student Tracking and Attendance

Taking attendance by roll call costs a teacher ten minutes a period and still cannot tell a parent whether their child actually boarded the bus. Bluetooth Low Energy tags and fixed receivers answer both questions without anyone filling in a register.

How the tracking works

Students carry a BLE tag. Fixed receivers placed around the campus and in buses detect those tags and record the detections. Attendance is derived from the detection pattern rather than being separately entered.

  • BLE tags registered per student
  • BLE receivers placed at campus and transport points
  • Detections recorded continuously
  • Attendance derived from detections

Transport, which is what parents actually worry about

Transport routes and transport events are tracked, so boarding and alighting become recorded facts. For a parent, the meaningful question is not whether the bus left on time — it is whether their child was on it.

Anomalies and alerts

The system maintains anomalies and alerts as their own records. A student detected on campus but not in class, a tag that stops reporting, a boarding without a corresponding alighting — these are the events worth surfacing, and they are exactly what a manual register cannot produce.

Students, classes and teachers

Student, class and teacher records underpin the tracking, so attendance resolves to the right class and period rather than to a raw stream of detections.

Why BLE rather than RFID or biometrics

RFID gates require students to file past a reader, which reintroduces the queue that automation was meant to remove. Biometrics raise consent and hygiene questions for children. BLE detects passively at range, so attendance happens as a by-product of the student being present.

A self-service trial provisions a working tenant with the standard catalogue already loaded, so you can run a real process rather than watch a demo.

Frequently asked questions

Do students need to scan anything?

No. BLE tags are detected passively by fixed receivers, so attendance is derived from presence rather than from an action the student has to perform.

Does it cover school buses?

Yes. Transport routes and transport events are tracked, so boarding and alighting are recorded.

What happens if a tag stops reporting?

The system maintains anomalies and alerts as their own records, so gaps in the expected detection pattern are surfaced rather than silently producing a wrong attendance figure.

How is attendance calculated?

From the detection records against student, class and teacher data, rather than from a separate manual entry.
